Jennie Bateman has fallen in love again with Thomas, her former husband, but Tasha, his daughter, is determined to destroy their relationship. Jennie destroyed their first marriage two decades earlier when, in the midst of a manic episode, she abandoned Thomas, choosing, instead, a life of shameless debauchery. Now, they have rekindled their love, but Tasha, Thomas’s daughter, is determined to block any plans for a second wedding. After all, Tasha declares, Jennie’s medicine won’t work forever, and another manic episode surely lies in her future. When it erupts, it will ruin Thomas’s life a second time. Shamed by Tasha and hoping to prove she is cured, Jennie ponders tossing her medication, but. she fears Tasha is correct − she will fail the test, and the demons of her disorder will rush back in. In Once and Future Wife, we follow Jennie as she goes a second round with her demons as they conspire to thwart her chance for a second marriage and to steal the love and happiness that seem to be within her grasp. A stand alone sequel to Those Children Are Ours, Once and Future Wife picks up four years after the first book ends. Each can be read and enjoyed alone.

Once and Future Wife David Burnett 9781532724381 Books Reviews
When I read David Burnett’s ‘Those Children Are Ours’ I thought the story was well written and the characters believable. I simply could not get enough. Therefore, when I discovered that there was a sequel I could not wait to get my hands on it. I expected it to be as good as the first book and I was not disappointed. Once and Future Wife can be read as a stand-alone. However, I would recommend that you read Those Children Are Ours first so that you will better appreciate the events taking place in the sequel.
Thomas has moved on with his life, after suffering so much from being abandoned by Jennie and was left to take care of two small children. He had given upon Jennie returning and after several years has found happiness with Emma. However, this happiness was to be destroyed when tragedy struck and Thomas and his children lost Emma. Thomas was left to care for their newborn on his own.
Jennie has gotten her life back on track after recognizing that she had bipolar disorder. She has been reunited with her children and had regular visits with them. She has a great job and enjoying life like a normal person. One thing, however, has not changed and that was her feelings for Thomas. As such when she heard that Emma was killed, she began to wonder if there was a chance for Thomas and her to rekindle what they once had. (This is not to say she was not affected by the death of Emma. They had moved past their and became friends.) Thomas has come to realise that Jennie was not the same woman who had abandoned her family years ago. He has started to rely heavily on her for help with the newborn. As a result, they grew closer. Just when things seem to be going great between them, Thomas’ step-daughter Tasha decided that she would destroy Jennie. Will she succeed in her diabolical plan?
Once and Future Wife which I found inspiring and emotional, is a story of love, acceptance, second chances and forgiveness. Once again David Burnett has transported me into a world where I got a first-hand look at the effects of mental illness. He demonstrated the misunderstanding that surrounds it and the daily struggles that sufferers of the disorder face. He also demonstrated the effect it has on their loved ones.
If you are looking for a story that will engage you and keep you glued to the pages, then Once and Future Wife would be a good choice.
I have to admit I did not read Those Children Are Ours so was thrown into the storyline that that book created. My guess is that both Once and Future Wife and the prequel can be read as standalones as this book read great to me without the previous book.
I relate Once and Future Wife to watching a scary, not necessarily horror movie but one with scary parts, movie. There were parts of the book that I knew were going to play out in a way I would not like. Jennie was making decisions I would not endorse or would not have personally made. I had to, at times, get up and walk away for a little bit to get in the right mindset to continue reading. It was either walk away or scream at the screen of my app as I wanted to tell her not to do that.
More than the settings in different parts of this book – small town Georgia, Atlanta, Charleston, all of which I love – I was drawn to the unwritten commentary on mental health that threads its way through the book. I pleaded, in my mind, with Jennie Bateman to not throw away her 12 years of constant living by doing something rash. I screamed, even though I walked away my brain was still screaming, at Jennie to talk things over with someone.
At times, the book hit too close to home. I do not have bi-polar disorder but know those who do and who have tried the self-medication or no medication routes. Neither have proved successful in real life so I had a slight idea of how this was going to end up. What I couldn’t count on in my real life to book life scenario comparison was the strength of Thomas’s character. I did not know how he would react.
I truly believe everyone should read this book for any number of reasons. First and foremost, it is a good read. Second, it discusses a topic that in many social circles is taboo – yet, a topic that needs to see the light of day more frequently. Third, while I could try to predict the ending, I did not have a good grasp on it until the last few pages of the book.
I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.
We love everything this author writes and are looking forward to more.
Riveting. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. Jennie Bateman's journey to becoming the future wife and struggle with bipolar disorder was heart wrenching. Must read.
Started a little slow; however, I really got into the characters. Surprising turn of events most certainly makes this a good read.
Either the author has lived this crazy bipo life of mine or he is 1 check of a researcher. I say it is like changing into a werewolf-you know it is happening yet you are powerless to stop it. Even with the best med regiments and intentions it is not easy, but without them and an addiction added in it a living help.
This was a great second book in the series, and a real page turner. I didn't realize there was a second book that this was a series. You laugh and cry and hope for the best all the through the book. This author doesn't disappoint what a great book
